A Taste of Financial Breathing Room

August 13, 2025 This summer, I got a rare taste of financial breathing room—I received my paychecks for both July and August all at once. For a while, it felt incredible to see that balance in my account, paying bills the moment they arrived instead of waiting for the next payday.
But as the month wraps up, so does the extra money. I’ll admit, I felt a bit bummed—frustrated, even.

Then I stopped and thought about the positives:
1. I stuck to my budget all summer. Even with the extra money sitting there, I didn’t overspend.
2. I experienced what it’s like to live without paycheck-to-paycheck stress. Mostly, I felt confident and at ease—and that feeling is priceless.

It was a great reminder of what I’m working toward. Sometimes it feels like the only way to get there is to earn more, but the truth is, I can (and should) save a little each month—no matter how small. Small progress is still progress.

Having this cushion, even briefly, showed me how much peace of mind comes with having 2–3 months of income set aside. That alone is enough motivation to keep going.

If you want more financial freedom—or just want to make steady progress—here are the next steps I’m taking (and you could try them, too):
Schedule a budget date. I like to do mine at a coffee shop as a small treat.
Review spending habits to spot new ways to save.
Create a September budget that supports my goals (college savings, building an emergency fund).
Pick a savings challenge—this keeps it fun! It might be a “no-spend month,” saving all $5 bills, the 52-Week Challenge, or cutting one habit to free up cash.

In my next blog, I’ll share which challenge I chose and how it’s going. For now, I’m focusing on staying positive and celebrating the progress I’ve made—because every step forward counts.
