The Lowdown on Scam Links

Scammers are getting better and better at making fake links look legit. So before you click on that URL (the string of letters that makes up a web address), examine it for any red flags, including added text before and after the real web address. And remember, Summit Credit Union will never send you a link over text, email or social media requesting personal information, like your username, password or PIN.What if you did accidentally click? Here are some steps you can take to protect yourself:Reach out to us right away at 800-236-5560 if you’ve given out your digital banking username, password or one-time pass codes, your debit card or credit card number or PIN, or other account info.Keep an eye on credit and debit card activity. If you haven’t done so, set up controls for your Summit credit or debit card in your mobile app (select Card Controls in the menu and follow the prompts). You can use this feature to temporarily turn your card “off” and prevent unauthorized purchases.Disconnect the device you were using from the internet to avoid malware spreading to any other devices across the network.Scan your device using a trusted antivirus or security software. You may be able to run the scan without being connected to the internet.Change your passwords, especially on your financial accounts and online banking, using a different device than the one you were using when you clicked the suspicious link.If you think you’ve been a victim of a scam or experienced a fraud attempt, reach out to your financial institution right away.
